A two party state?
The ANC’s forced removal of Mbeki could give way to a new era in South African politics. Mbeki loyalists are forming a new party, which many hope will balance what has been a one party state since 1994. Other political parties, including the Inkatha Freedom Party, the Democratic Alliance, and the Communist Party, never gain more than a small fraction of votes.
Former defense minister Mosiuoa Lekota, former deputy defense minister Mluleki George, and former premier of Gauteng Mbhazima Shilowa, appear to be the leaders of the new political party. A convention is scheduled for Nov. 2.
The new party has not released a political platform, but it is clear that they are fed up with ANC infighting. Lekota hopes to give the ANC a run for their money and at the very least put pressure on the party to make good on promises, including expedited service delivery.
