Or 春运 (“Spring Travel”). In this two week time period, there are apparently ~2 billion journeys taken (primarily by train). Most people will end up with standing tickets, meaning you can find a free space on the train to stand. I did that once (rather, sat awkwardly on the sink next to the toilet) on the way from Shanhaiguan to Beijing – it was my first time reading the canon – seemed slightly ironic at the time.

These are from Sunday afternoon at about ~2:00pm at Wuchang Train Station. There were a lot of people, but it did seem very orderly. At this point most people at the station have their tickets. Also did not observe any of the reportedly rampant ticket scalping.
