Asking about where to buy a copy of the textbook for an Intellectual Property Law class, a local student responds: “Oh – you don’t have to buy it. We all just photocopy from one text. I’ll get you one.”

OMG. The perfect example of modern China. All of my Chinese books came photocopied and bound in grocery-bag-brown-paper. Including Oprah’s book club pick, The Good Earth. (Pearl Buck used to live on campus–I passed her house every day in my walk between the Foreign Students dorm and my classroom building.)
Excellent.
My inner librarian sighs in despair.
