I didn’t end up spending much time in Dandong. Snap judgement: if you had to pick a place to live in China, you could do a lot worse. Staring down at North Korea from a junky Chinese boat it became even more difficult to ignore the opinion that the Chinese Communist Party has done more to advance human wellbeing in the world in the last quarter-century than any other entity. The contrast is especially striking at Dandong, where the Chinese side is well developed, whereas the North Korean side resembles what the mainland looked like ~25 years ago: Sure the very same CCP runs roughshod over human rights all over the world – but why shouldn’t it be a numbers game? 1.3 billion is a lot of people to have moved out of abject poverty. |
